E-rate is something that many people utilize, but might not know what it is. Put simply., e-rate standards for the Schools and Libraries program with the Universal Service Fund. This fund, managed by the FCC, helps make telecommunication and IT services cheaper for schools and libraries. That funding can go to numerous things such as:
- Wi-Fi hot spots
- Broadband access
- Hardware related to connectivity like cabling, routers, switches etc.
- Software to support the maintenance and deployment of
Schools and libraries can apply for this funding, but they do need to make sure they follow requirements. This is where digital citizenship comes in. Schools and libraries that receive e-rate funding must comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). This means that they must “provide for educating minors about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and cyberbullying awareness and response.”
